Nursing Assistant Course Description

The Nursing Assistant course is 120 Hours of training consisting of 75 classroom hours and 45 clinical hours. The clinical portion of the training is conducted at a long term care facility. All instruction is given by registered nurses. The classroom portion of the training is broken down into five modules and includes both lab and lecture. The clinical portion is hands on patient care under the supervision of an Americare instructor. Included in the training are all state and federal required elements which prepare students for the State Competency Evaluations and for employment as a Nursing Assistant.

The maximum student: teacher ratio for the Nursing Assistant program is 20:1 for the classroom portion of training and 10:1 for the clinical portion.

Nursing Assistant Clinical Externship

Upon successful completion of the 75 hours of classroom instruction, students will attend 45 hours of clinical instruction given at a long term care facility and under the supervision of an Americare instructor. During the clinical rotation, students will be able to gain hands on practical experience working with patients in an actual nursing facility. Students must complete all scheduled clinical hours to be eligible for graduation.

Nursing Assistant Vocational Objectives 

Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant program, students will be expected to successfully perform the following procedures: 

  • Measure & Record Vital Signs
  • Give Patient a Partial Bath
  • Assist Patient from a Bed to a Wheelchair
  • Wash Hands
  • Clean & Store Dentures
  • Make an Occupied Bed
  • Apply Elastic Stocking
  • Assist Patient to Brush Teeth
  • Reposition Patient in a Wheelchair
  • Assist with use of a Bedpan
  • Perform Range of Motion Exercises
  • Assist with Turning the Patient
  • Assist with Dressing the Patient
  • Assist the Patient to Walk
  • Measure & Record Height & Weight
  • Apply Lotion to Dry Skin
  • Assist Transfer from a Bed to a Chair
